My Philosophy of Student Discipline I believe that each child is unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invite a sharing of ideas. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment namely, the teacher acting guide, allowing the child’s natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, promoting respect for all the things and all the people. My passion in teaching and desire to make a difference to an individual has something to do on my philosophy of disciplining them in my classroom. Their mind became busy on what they are doing and they are not idle because being as such crave in seeking teacher’s attention. I enforce simple and clear rules for students to follow and set expectations from them. Every day, I assure them to be engaged on task productively thus challenging their inquisitive mind simultaneously. Allowing their natural curiosity to direct his/her learning I impose rules and procedures inside the classroom. Punishments are given but not resulting to having fear on me instead giving it in a subtle way. In that case they won’t resort to any inappropriate action and they will follow the rules appropriately. Rules such as listening to teachers while talking, raising their hands when they have questions and answer, and putting their assignment on the their table before the lesson starts, are being enforce consistently inside learning area. When they are doing the unnecessary behaviour during on task activity, I normally go to the child desk and eprimand him/her, or giving them an authoritative look to remind them that their action is inappropriate. Sometimes I call the child to stay 15 minutes late before sending her home while informing the parents the reason of him being late in going home. However, in day to day bases, extreme naughtiness of student can’t really be avoided either in educational mainstream or in an inclusive classroom. I apply punishment to students who have done extreme misbehaviour and reward for those who have done appropriate behaviour. However, handling and disciplining a special child have no difference in setting up rules and discipline. Considering their culture, and understanding student’s individuality, they are also individual who needs respect and more guidance to make their behaviour acceptable in society. Though they also learn in different ways and in different rate, still it is important to employ various strategies for helping a special child learn how to appropriately behave in the classroom. Such as positioning myself near my student, catching her eye, or gently touching her shoulder is my way of bringing her back to focus and I found out that those are effective strategy, a subtle reminder that I’m aware of her actions. Verbally reminding the student how to act appropriately or inviting him/her to make an appropriate choice is more direct and also effective. With these simple techniques, allows the student to participate in the workings of the classroom by refocusing him as he watches what other students are doing. I also impose the traditional â€Å"time-outs† rarely in the classroom, and only when other strategies have already been tried. Time out such as letting her sit in thinking chair with an hour glass beside him/her. To reinforce that the time-out is the consequence of a choice the student made, it is important for the student to keep track of her own time-out by using an hour glass. I don’t employ extreme physical punishment to them because of their condition. Disciplining these kinds of students is more on verbalization and written warning. You can’t go wrong in changing children negative behaviour to positive if you only respect their individuality. Taking a proactive approach to classroom management by creating a highly engaging environment and maintaining clear expectations is a key to a well-managed classroom. That being said, when children do not meet behavioral expectations, discipline becomes necessary. Maria Montessori once pointed out that the word â€Å"discipline† is derived from â€Å"disciple†, which means teacher. The purpose of discipline should not be to punish, but rather to teach the child acceptable ways to behave. They need to be respected. They value your concern when they are respected. The more they are behaved and respect you if you value their worthiness as individual. In the sense that children as they are they claim to be reminded in subtle way.
